Fix Slow Startup After Windows Update | Windows Startup Optimizer

0
Have you experienced that "CONFIGURING WINDOWS UPDATE" appears on your computer screen?

You're not alone.

This usually happens when your startup is too slow or your system is trying to automatically install pending Windows updates. After updates are configured, you might also see a long-running cleaning process, sometimes taking up to an hour or more to complete.

But here’s the thing: If an update fails or freezes, it can lead to major issues with your system performance.

How to Access Windows Update Settings

  • Click on the Start Menu or click on search "windows update"

  • Go to Settings → Update & Security
  • Select Windows Update

What Should You Do?

First Phase-RECOVERY:

If your screen is stuck on "Configuring Windows Update," follow this specific order of operations to save your PC:

Step 1: The "Activity Test" (Is it actually frozen?)

Before you panic, check if the computer is still "thinking."

  • Look for a flickering small light on your laptop or CPU (the Disk Activity light). If it’s blinking, DO NOT turn it off; it’s still working on your files.

  • Keyboard Test: Press the Caps Lock or Num Lock key. If the light on your keyboard toggles on and off, your processor is still responsive. Wait at least 2 more hours.

Step 2: The "Last Resort" Hard Reset

If the screen hasn't moved for 3+ hours and the keyboard/lights are unresponsive, the update has likely crashed.

  • Hold the Power Button for 10 full seconds until the machine dies.

  • What: This can cause "Blue Screen" errors, but if the system is truly deadlocked, there is no other choice.

  • To Reboot: Turn it back on. Windows will usually say "Undoing changes made to your computer." Let it finish.

Step 3: Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter

Once you are back on your desktop, you must fix the "broken" update file that caused the freeze.

  1. Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot.

  2. Select Other troubleshooters.

  3. Click Run next to Windows Update. This clears the "SoftwareDistribution" folder where corrupted update downloads hide.

Step 4: Check Your Disk Space

Windows updates often freeze because the "C:" drive is full.

  • Requirement: Ensure you have at least 20GB of free space.

  • Quick Fix: Run Disk Cleanup and select "Clean up system files" to delete old update logs and temporary files that are clogging your startup.

Second Phase: These are prevention and most of the time last resort

  • Wait it out.
  • Keep your device connected to power when updating.
  • Ensure you have a stable internet connection.
  • Back up important files before major updates. I use Google Drive for my files, and do this weekly
  • Yes, really. As frustrating as it is, interrupting the update or turning off your PC mid-process can corrupt important system files.
  • Know the limits. If you’ve been stuck for over 5 to 8 hours (as reported by users in Microsoft forums), it’s time to act.
Lastly, contact support or check hardware.

Reach out to Microsoft Support or visit a technician to ensure it’s not a hardware failure or disk-related issue.

To avoid this in the future:

Don’t panic if your screen seems frozen. Just stay patient, and when in doubt, seek expert help to avoid making things worse.
