<div>Parents have the delicate task of maintaining a loving, touching family relationship while also teaching their child or children to recognize and reject "bad touches". </div><div><br /></div>1. Know your children's friends. <div>-"Know" [not like the stalky type of behavior that might push you off by your kids]. My mother always let us invite our friends into our home, whenever there's a group project or just for playtime. This is her way to know how we interact and how we behave. Parents should know who were the people their child interacts with, you may not know there could be someone else trying to befriend your child but they have another agenda for them. </div><div><br /></div><div>2. Never leave your child unattended. </div><div>-[this is very important!] I've seen parents with their phones, literally not minding their own child and freaked out when they've gone missing. You have to get your head straight and focus on your child whenever you are with them. </div><div><br /></div><div>3. Be involved in your child's activities.</div><div>-Most parents were having a hard time getting involved in their child's activities because of the experience and gap between the generations. I've seen children who do not want to ask anything about their studies or technology because they seem not confident with the capabilities of their parents [which is really sad]. Parents should not just be a guardian but also a best friend of their child even at a young age, interaction is always important.</div><div><br /></div><div>4. Listen when your child tells you he or she does not want to be with someone.</div><div><br /></div><div>5. Be sensitive to changes in your child's behavior or attitudes. </div><div>-Yes! Please do remember this one. Other parents don't have time to check on their kids, and their main reason was they're tired, busy, wanted to relax. They ignored the emotional needs of their children. I was bullied in grade school up until college, but it took a toll on me when I was in 4th-year high school, I suffer from depression and had a therapy when I was in college [without my mother knowing]. I prefer to keep it to myself because whenever I wanted to tell my problems to her, she doesn't seem interested and always focuses on her job and to her things. </div><div><br /></div><div>6. Pay attention when someone shows greater than normal interest in your child. </div><div><br /></div><div>7. Have your child fingerprinted and know where to locate dental records. </div><div>-This seems to be a lot of effort, but it will help you just in case something happened. </div><div><br /></div><div>8. Take a photograph of your child each year (4 times each year if under age 2)</div><div><br /></div><div>9. Be prepared to describe your children accurately - including clothing, visible identifying marks, or special characteristics. </div><div><br /></div><div>10. Develop a set procedure should you and your child become separated while away from home.</div><div><br /></div><div>11. Do not buy items that visibly display your child's name. </div><div>-It might attract molesters or kidnappers. Some children are too gullible to believe someone. </div><div><br /></div><div>12. Be sure your child's school or day-care center will not release your child to anyone other than you or someone you officially designate.</div><div><br /></div><div>13. My grandma’s eldest son which is now 55 years old still depends on her. My uncle doesn’t have any work or business to fulfill his needs and wants. </div>

My grandma is 83 years old. Each year of her life, she gets to experience the pain of taking care of my uncle. This is absolutely not her responsibility anymore, but his.</div>

We were mad at him for being so lazy and stubborn. My aunt tried to help him, but he just wastes everything. He spends his earnings on liquors and cigarettes. It came to a point that we no longer want him to stay in my grandmother’s house. BUT my grandma let him stay.<b> Even though he is scolding her, cursing and threatened her ALMOST every day, she forgave him.</b> <b>There’s no amount of respect or even a bit of help just by cleaning the house.</b> [<i>SHE STILL FORGAVE HIM</i>]</div>

We’ve tried so many things like offer to sell the house and move with my auntie. Buy my uncle a house, so he’ll stay away to our grandma, BUT…. She declined all of these. </div>

I don’t know why… I find it really hard to understand. It hurts to see that she’s okay with all of these. Maybe, we are not exerting more effort or<b> maybe, the love of a mother cannot be compared to anything in this world. </b></div>

I suddenly realize the love of my mom. Even if we have<b> made mistakes in our lives</b>, <b>my mom always forgives me</b>, though sometimes it takes months before she talked to me again. [second-year high school!!!!]</div>

My grandma saw the pain that my uncle is suffering from. My uncle is experiencing the pains of failure as a father, a husband, and a son. These things brought him all of the negativity and became like that.</div>

<b>My grandmother was the only one who saw these kinds of sufferings that he has and that could be the reason why she always forgives him.</b></div>

However, I’m still afraid of what could be the outcome. [This is going to be a long story, but I’ll try to make it shorter]</div>

At a very young age, I saw the reality of parenting and relationships. I was the one who caught my father cheating. That innocence of mine went away and I got confused about my life. </div>

These fairy tales of happily ever after only works for others, but not to my family. I love my parents… and when I was about to choose which side am I going to spend the rest of my life – I choose my mom. I saw how many times she attempts to kill herself while raising us. [I was just 7 years old at that time].</div>

I saw how it breaks the heart of my brother and sister, knowing that most of the adult thinks that children will not understand this kind of matter. BUT THEY DO, WE DO. I had to be strong at times my mother cry, throw anything that would make her remember my father, and when she can’t pull herself up.</div>

When my father abandoned us, there was this feeling inside of me that I want to release for a very long time [I can’t explain, I don’t know if it is anger or eagerness to know why!??]. After 10 or 11 years he visited us, I don’t know what to react, instead, I keep quiet and don’t look at him all day. BUT when he kissed me on my forehead, a tear drops in my eyes [I silently cry].<br />

I was never been honest about how I feel, being strong outside, showing my smile and living alone is my defense mechanism.</div>

I’ve never shown it to my mom that I’m weak [that I’m crying for help]. Every time we fight, it breaks my heart. I felt like I’m a bad person. I always make sure to get good grades, awards from extracurricular activities and do household chores to make her happy [but it was not enough]. I always show that IDGAF, even if I saw how she treated me vs how she treated my brother and sister [there’s a big difference].</div>

I always ask God as to why? Maybe because I’ve done mistakes that she would never forget. </div>

It was never easy…. I get part-time jobs, swallow my pride and ask for help financially, I almost get to not graduate from college. [I feel consumed] Expectations were always slapping my face that I must be the person that they can rely on and what would they think of. </div>

I must hold back my tears and cry when I’m alone.</div>

Whenever my friends ask me about what’s happening in my life, I always told them the same answer, that I’m fine, I’ll get through this; that everything that is happening to me is normal.</div>

Through the years, that hole inside of me grows that I don’t understand anymore if I am ME or another person already. I’ve hurt people because of lying. I moved on like nothing happened. </div>

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">September 2012, I met someone from Manila, this guy was just sitting at the Luneta park with his skateboard, staring at the other teenagers who also do skateboarding. [My friends approached him because they think he is cute lol]</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">He started talking, only when we asked him questions, he was not really into it. We added him on Facebook, I chat with him for how many years, meet him sometimes. And up until now we are still connected to each other. He admitted that he doesn't have any friends now, unlike before he was high school and college. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">He told me <i>it's fine to be alone, most of the time you don't have to depend on someone else</i>. And then he added, "<i>most people think they won't survive by themselves, that problems should be solved through talking to another person, or by sharing the problem with someone else</i>.<i> Instead of us thinking, researching about the solutions,</i><i> we usually depend on what other people say"</i></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I was also listening to a radio channel and the topic happened to be people who love to be alone [that was a long time ago]. That being alone, sometimes could be an individuals’ decision, or is affected by many factors. They also discussed how other people perceived individuals who prefer to be alone. Most of the surveyed results, they're depressed, self-centralized, boring, been bullied and there was no positive opinion!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">So, I decided to ask people on social media sites, to what could be their opinion and even to my friends and family.</span><br />

We people can get hurt in many ways. You can get emotionally, mentally or physically hurt, not just in the manner of being hurt because you are in love. And by these, it makes us avoid the things that will draw us to be hurt.</span><br />

If you are emotionally disturbed, you might tend to hurt yourself, this might be caused by your environment or peers. My mother and I have been disturbed because of this, and then she suddenly opens up and talked to us about it, that she doesn't have that confidence to converse well with other people, that she find it hard to talk to different people. Socializing for her was a big challenge. Though we are not forcing her to have friends at that time, we see progress, like her being open when it comes to her thoughts and what is happening to her at school. Before she wasn't even like that. I talk to my sister every day, ask her if what happened, how's her day -EVERYDAYYYY- and it did help a lot. I let my sister invite her classmates to our home whenever there's a group project so she'd be comfortable to socialize [because she knows I'm there to back up for her hahaha]. Social skills were considered a must nowadays for most jobs, and it was hard for others to overcome this.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">It might help those people that you know that are lacking social skills or is in need of help, to talk to them every time, not bugging them, but try to be the one to start the conversation. Still, my grandmother was not convinced and stated that it's better to go back from how it should be in the Philippines - (<i>THE WAY WE BURIED OUR LOVE ONES WHEN THEY DIED – CASKET</i>) and not the adopted or different kinds of things like these (<i>I DON’T KNOW THE WORD SO FORGIVE ME</i>).</span><br />

We didn't stop arguing not until the other one or</span><br />

<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "open sans" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; text-align: justify;">That person said to me that my pride is unreachable and that I'm not always right. That was the time when my mind says TIME OUT. So, I decided to </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "open sans" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; text-align: justify;">apologize, it takes 2 days (I think) before we stop arguing and not talking to each other.</span><br />

<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "open sans" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; text-align: justify;">The point in here is, you will never know if you are being driven by your pride when your anger</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "open sans" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; text-align: justify;">already burst. Even someone already mentions it, you will still have that second thought if you were really eaten by your pride and anger.</span><br />

It is just that, <b>we may not see how or what is already happening because we are forcing ourselves that we are right though sometimes we aren't.</b></span><br />

Lola Tina says, some women before were <b>prohibited to go outside after 6 PM</b>. She also applied this rule to her children.<br />

When it comes to <b><u><i>education</i></u></b>, <b>"Women were mostly at home and not going to school, which made them oppressed in society. Women now are striving for their dreams, can go to school, and make decisions of their own. I finished grade 3 back then, and just learning how to read and write makes me happy ".</b><br />

She said,<b> "When a guy hugs you, he has to marry you, because they highly respect the body of the woman before, unlike these generations."</b><br />
<br />
The perspective of my grandmother may be different from what other women before thought of women now.</span></div>
