The Philippine Identification System (PhilSys) or National ID is now the primary proof of identity in the Philippines. It’s free, permanent, and accepted in both government and private transactions.
If you don’t have one yet, here’s a step-by-step guide to help you register.
Why You Should Get a National ID
-
It’s a primary government ID, making it easier for banking, accessing government services, and traveling within the Philippines.
-
Having a primary ID is preferable to relying solely on secondary IDs. Some banks or offices are strict with requirements.
-
Once you have your PhilID, you won’t need to carry multiple IDs anymore.

What to Bring When You Register
Before you head to the registration center, make sure you have the right documents. These are what PhilSys accepts:
Primary Documents (best option!)
If you already have one of these, your registration will be much easier:
-
PSA Birth Certificate + any government ID with your photo and signature
-
Philippine Passport or ePassport
-
UMID Card (SSS/GSIS)
-
Driver’s License (student permit, non-pro, or professional from LTO)
Tip: If there’s any mismatch between your birth certificate and ID, the PSA Birth Certificate will be considered the official record.
Secondary Documents
Don’t worry if you don’t have a primary ID yet — you can still register by bringing any of these:
-
Birth certificates from the PSA or Local Civil Registry
-
PRC ID (for professionals)
-
Voter’s ID or Certification from COMELEC
-
PhilHealth ID, Postal ID, or Senior Citizen ID
-
Police Clearance or NBI Clearance
-
Barangay ID or Barangay Certificate
-
Employee ID or School ID
-
Other government-issued IDs like OWWA ID, PWD ID, Seaman’s Book, 4Ps ID, TIN card, Solo Parent ID, etc.
As long as the ID has your photo, full name, and signature or thumbmark, it can usually be accepted.
In short: If you have a primary ID, use it, it will save you time. But if not, secondary IDs are still okay.

Finally, waiting for Your National ID
-
Some branches may advise you to return after 2 weeks if you need an advance copy (temporary slip).
-
Otherwise, your PhilID card will be delivered to your preferred address (permanent or current residence).
-
Delivery time varies, but expect weeks to months depending on location.
Tips From My Experience
✨ Arrive early! I arrived at 10:30 AM and finished at almost 4:00 PM, mostly waiting in line. If you want to avoid long hours, be there before opening.
✨ Download the eGov PH App while waiting.
This app integrates PhilSys with other government services:
✨ Bring a primary ID if you can, it makes the process smoother and faster.
The Philippine National ID will soon be the most important ID you’ll carry. The process may take time (lots of waiting), but it’s worth it. Make sure to bring the right documents, go early, and be patient.
