Getting your hands on a valid ID in the Philippines can feel like a mini achievement, especially if you’ve tried applying for one and had to go through long lines [ang haba ng pila 😖], endless requirements, or waiting for months for it to arrive (we’ve all been there and up to now I'm still waiting for my national ID).
But whether you’re applying for a bank account, getting verified online, or processing documents, having at least one primary ID is a must. These IDs are accepted almost everywhere, from government offices to courier services, and even job applications.
So, if you’re not sure which ones count as primary IDs in the Philippines, here’s a rundown:
Commonly Accepted Primary IDs
-
Philippine Passport
One of the most valid and widely accepted forms of identification. You can use it locally and internationally, and it serves as solid proof of citizenship.
→ Apply through the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA). -
Driver’s License (issued by LTO)
Whether it’s a student, non-pro, or professional license, it’s still one of the easiest ways to verify your identity.
→ Apply or renew through the Land Transportation Office (LTO). -
UMID (Unified Multi-Purpose ID)
This card covers SSS, PhilHealth, Pag-IBIG, and GSIS, so it’s a multi-agency ID that’s super useful for both government and private transactions.
→ Apply via the SSS official website. -
PhilSys National ID
The newest addition, and honestly, one of the most convenient. It’s now accepted in most establishments, and you can even use the digital version (from the PhilSys app) while waiting for your physical card.
→ Register through the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys).

PRC ID (Professional Regulation Commission)
For professionals like engineers, teachers, or nurses, this ID works not only as proof of identity but also as a license to practice.
→ Check requirements via the PRC Online Services. -
Postal ID (New Version)
The newer version of the Postal ID is valid for both public and private transactions. It’s one of the easiest to apply for too!
→ Apply online at Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost). -
Voter’s ID / COMELEC eID
Issued by COMELEC, this is another valid proof of identity and residency, though some institutions might prefer IDs with a photo and signature that are more recent.
→ Visit COMELEC’s official website for registration and ID information.
Have at least one government-issued ID ready
If you’re just starting to build your list of IDs, go for something easy to get, like a Postal ID or National ID. They’re valid almost everywhere and don’t take as long as a passport or driver’s license.
Having at least one primary ID saves you from a lot of hassle, especially if you plan to open bank accounts, apply for jobs, or verify your identity online (looking at you, payment platforms like Stripe!).
Getting a valid ID might take some effort, but it’s one of those things that’s really worth doing. Once you have one, so many doors open, literally and figuratively.
